Devised and originated by its Creative Director, Amie Slavin
SoundSpiral is a uniquely interactive audio playback environment, holding forty-eight speakers within a specially-designed inflatable venue.
The first work to be shown in the space will be Babel Spring, by Amie Slavin and Duncan Chapman.
This inaugural piece, designed to reflect on the nature of cultural difference and shared experience, in this Olympic year, draws together forty-two recorded voices, speaking the same, specially commissioned, prose, in forty-two different languages, and six unique chirruping voices.
The chirrups are yours to record and upload; our system will do the rest. Please go to the ‘join in’ page for information about how and what to chirrup.
The voices follow each other through the ‘Spiral, gently melting into one piece of new music as human barriers break down and become one synergistic musical composition..
SoundSpiral (Babel Spring) will be showing at selected venues during 2012 as part of the London 2012 East Midlands Festival of Festivals, before moving to its legacy phase which will see it become a portable venue, offering far-reaching opportunities for artists and for everybody to join in, making work for this mad structure, and building a collection of large-scale sound works for new audiences, affordably.
Babel Spring’s bespoke technology means you can join in with the Sound Installation, by uploading your own audio recordings, even with just your mobile phone, or via a PC, so that your chosen sounds are fed into the Babel Spring, processed and made a part of it. Click here to read the Babel Spring prose, by Tanya Mayers, in all its translations, and here to listen to the recorded translations.
